# How to Replace IKEA Kitchen Drawer Slides and Runners

Kitchen drawers get used more than almost any other moving component in your home. The average kitchen drawer is opened and closed 5-10 times per day — that adds up to thousands of cycles per year. Over time, even high-quality drawer slides wear out. They become noisy, sticky, or wobbly. In severe cases, they can fail completely, leaving a drawer that will not open or close properly.

If your IKEA kitchen drawers are not operating smoothly, replacing the slides is a straightforward repair that makes a dramatic difference in how your kitchen feels to use. This guide covers both IKEA drawer systems — MAXIMERA (full-extension, premium) and UTRUSTA (basic) — with complete step-by-step instructions for Mid-Atlantic homeowners.

Signs Your Drawer Slides Need Replacement

Not every drawer problem requires new slides. Here are the symptoms that specifically point to slide failure rather than other issues:

Definite Slide Problems

  • Grinding or scraping noise when opening or closing — metal-on-metal contact indicates worn rollers or bent tracks
  • Drawer wobbles side to side when extended — the slide bearings are worn and no longer hold the drawer firmly
  • Drawer does not extend fully — the slide mechanism is binding or damaged
  • Drawer will not stay closed — the detent mechanism that holds the drawer in the closed position is worn out
  • Drawer falls off track when pulled out — the slide is damaged or the mounting has failed
  • Soft-close no longer works — the damper mechanism has failed (on MAXIMERA slides)
  • Visible damage — bent tracks, broken plastic components, or missing rollers

Problems That Might Not Be the Slides

Before replacing slides, rule out these other issues:

  • Drawer is heavy and hard to open: Could be overloading rather than slide failure. Redistribute contents
  • Drawer is slightly misaligned: May just need adjustment rather than replacement. See our common cabinet problems guide
  • Drawer front is loose: The front panel attachment is separate from the slide mechanism
  • Drawer box is damaged: If the drawer box itself is cracked or coming apart, replacing slides alone will not solve the problem

Understanding IKEA's Drawer Systems

IKEA uses two distinct drawer systems in their SEKTION kitchens, and they are not interchangeable without modification.

MAXIMERA Drawers

MAXIMERA is IKEA's premium drawer system with full-extension slides. Key features:

  • Full extension — the drawer pulls out completely, giving access to the entire drawer contents
  • Soft-close mechanism — built-in dampers slow the drawer for the last few inches of travel
  • Integrated metal sides — the drawer box has steel sides that are part of the slide mechanism
  • Higher weight capacity — rated for heavier loads than UTRUSTA
  • Self-closing — a spring mechanism pulls the drawer closed from a few inches out
  • Tool-free drawer removal — release clips allow you to remove the drawer without tools

UTRUSTA Drawers

UTRUSTA is IKEA's basic drawer system. Features include:

  • Three-quarter extension — the drawer does not fully extend, so the back portion is harder to access
  • No soft-close — unless aftermarket dampers are added
  • Simpler construction — basic roller slides mounted to the cabinet sides
  • Lower weight capacity — suitable for lighter items like utensils and linens
  • Lower cost — significantly cheaper than MAXIMERA

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather these items before you start:

Tools

  • Phillips head screwdriver (#2 size)
  • Power drill with Phillips bit (optional but helpful)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil for marking
  • Level (small torpedo level works best)
  • Flashlight — the inside of cabinets is dark

Materials

  • Replacement drawer slides — matched to your system (MAXIMERA or UTRUSTA) and drawer size
  • Replacement screws if the existing ones are stripped or damaged
  • Wood glue and toothpicks for filling stripped screw holes
  • Silicone spray lubricant for preventive maintenance on remaining drawers

How to Replace MAXIMERA Drawer Slides

The MAXIMERA system is more complex but also more precisely engineered. Here is the complete process:

Step 1: Remove the Drawer

  1. Pull the drawer out as far as it will go
  2. Locate the release clips on both sides of the drawer — they are small plastic tabs on the slide mechanism near the front of the drawer
  3. Press or pull both release clips simultaneously
  4. Lift the front of the drawer slightly and pull it forward and off the slides
  5. Set the drawer aside on a protected surface

Step 2: Remove the Old Slides

  1. With the drawer removed, you can see the slides mounted inside the cabinet
  2. Each slide is attached to the cabinet side with screws — typically 3-4 screws per side
  3. Note the exact position of the slides before removing them — take a photo or mark the screw hole positions with a pencil
  4. Remove all screws from one slide
  5. Pull the slide out of the cabinet
  6. Repeat for the other side
  7. Also remove the rear mounting bracket if present — MAXIMERA slides often have a bracket at the back of the cabinet

Step 3: Prepare for New Slides

  1. Inspect the screw holes in the cabinet — if any are stripped (the screw spins freely), repair them:

- Fill the hole with 2-3 wooden toothpicks dipped in wood glue

- Let the glue dry for at least 4 hours

- Snap the toothpicks flush with the surface

  1. Clean the inside of the cabinet — remove any debris or old lubricant
  2. Verify that your replacement slides are the correct length for your cabinet depth

Step 4: Install New Slides

  1. Position the new slide against the cabinet side, aligning with the existing screw holes (or your pencil marks)
  2. Verify the slide is level using your torpedo level
  3. Drive the first screw — start with the front screw to establish position
  4. Check level again
  5. Drive the remaining screws — do not overtighten. The screws should be snug but not forced
  6. Repeat for the other side
  7. Install the rear mounting bracket if your new slides include one
  8. Make sure both slides are at the same height and are parallel to each other

Step 5: Reinstall the Drawer

  1. Extend both slides to their full length
  2. Align the drawer's side rails with the extended slides
  3. Set the drawer onto the slides at the back
  4. Push the drawer in slowly — you should feel it engage with the slide mechanism
  5. Push the drawer fully closed — the soft-close mechanism should pull it in for the last few inches
  6. Open and close the drawer several times to verify smooth operation
  7. If the drawer is not level or centered, adjust the front mounting clips (MAXIMERA has built-in adjustment)

How to Replace UTRUSTA Drawer Slides

UTRUSTA slides are simpler but the basic process is similar.

Step 1: Remove the Drawer

  1. Pull the drawer fully open
  2. Lift the front of the drawer while tilting it slightly
  3. The drawer should lift off the rollers and slide rails
  4. If the drawer does not release easily, look for retaining clips that need to be pressed

Step 2: Remove Old Slides

  1. Locate the screws holding each slide to the cabinet side — usually 2-3 screws per slide
  2. Remove all screws and pull the slides out
  3. Note: UTRUSTA slides may have a separate roller at the back of the cabinet. Remove this as well

Step 3: Install New Slides

  1. Position the new slide in the same location as the old one
  2. Check level — this is critical for smooth drawer operation
  3. Drive screws to secure the slide
  4. Install the rear roller or bracket if included
  5. Repeat for the other side

Step 4: Reinstall the Drawer

  1. Place the drawer onto the slides at an angle, engaging the rear rollers first
  2. Lower the front and push the drawer in
  3. Test operation — the drawer should glide smoothly without wobble

Upgrading from UTRUSTA to MAXIMERA

If you are replacing worn UTRUSTA slides, consider upgrading to MAXIMERA for a significant improvement in functionality. This upgrade requires:

  • New MAXIMERA slides in the correct size for your cabinet
  • A new MAXIMERA drawer box — the drawer construction is different from UTRUSTA and the two are not interchangeable
  • Possibly new mounting holes — MAXIMERA slides may mount in slightly different positions than UTRUSTA

The upgrade is absolutely worth it for frequently used drawers like the utensil drawer, the pot and pan drawer, and the trash/recycling drawer. The full extension means you can reach everything in the drawer, and the soft-close action is a daily luxury.

Cost of the Upgrade

  • MAXIMERA drawer box: $25-60 depending on size
  • MAXIMERA slides: included with the drawer or sold separately for $15-30
  • Total per drawer: approximately $40-$90
  • For a kitchen with 6-8 drawers: $240-$720

Troubleshooting After Installation

Even after a careful replacement, you may encounter a few issues. Here is how to resolve them:

Drawer Does Not Close the Last Inch

The self-closing mechanism is not engaging properly. Check that both slides are at the same height and that the rear brackets are properly positioned. Also verify that the drawer box is not warped — set it on a flat surface to check.

Drawer Is Tight or Stiff

New slides sometimes need a break-in period. Open and close the drawer 20-30 times to loosen the mechanism. If it remains stiff, verify that both slides are perfectly parallel — even a slight angle creates binding. Also check that the screws are not over-driven, which can cause the slide to bow inward.

Soft-Close Is Too Weak or Too Strong

Some MAXIMERA slides and aftermarket options have adjustable damping. Look for a small adjustment dial or screw on the damper mechanism. If the damping is not adjustable and feels wrong, the damper unit may be defective — contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

Drawer Sits Crooked When Closed

The drawer front is likely misaligned. MAXIMERA drawers have front adjustment screws inside the drawer box that allow you to shift the front panel left, right, up, or down. Loosen the adjustment screws, reposition the front, and retighten.

Maintaining Drawer Slides for Longevity

After replacing your slides, keep them in top condition with these maintenance practices:

  • Lubricate annually — apply a light coat of silicone spray lubricant to the slide rails once a year. Wipe off excess
  • Do not overload drawers — respect weight limits. MAXIMERA handles more, but even it has limits
  • Keep slides clean — crumbs and debris that fall into the slide mechanism cause premature wear
  • Avoid slamming — even with soft-close, pushing drawers closed with excessive force wears the damper mechanism
  • Check screws annually — part of your regular seasonal maintenance routine
  • Address problems early — a drawer that starts making noise is telling you something. A small issue today becomes a bigger repair tomorrow

Sourcing Replacement Parts

IKEA replacement slides can be obtained from:

  • IKEA stores — check the spare parts section or ask at the returns/exchanges counter
  • IKEA online — spare parts can be ordered through their website
  • Third-party retailers — Amazon and other online retailers sell compatible slides. Verify dimensions and compatibility before purchasing
  • Blum and Hettich — these European hardware manufacturers make high-quality slides that can be adapted to fit SEKTION cabinets with minor modifications
