IKEA Kitchen Pantry Tower and Tall Cabinet Guide

Why Tall Cabinets Transform Kitchen Storage

Tall cabinets are the most underutilized secret weapon in IKEA kitchen design. While base and wall cabinets get most of the attention, a single tall pantry tower can hold as much as an entire wall of upper cabinets. In kitchens across the mid-Atlantic region — from compact Philadelphia rowhomes to spacious Maryland colonials — we consistently see homeowners gain dramatically more storage by incorporating just one or two tall cabinets into their layout.

IKEA's SEKTION system offers tall cabinets in several heights and widths, with numerous internal configurations. This guide walks through every option so you can choose the right setup for your kitchen.

IKEA Tall Cabinet Dimensions

Heights Available

IKEA SEKTION tall cabinets come in three heights:

  • 80 inches (203 cm): Fits under standard 8-foot ceilings with room for toe kick and a small gap at the top. This is the most commonly used height.
  • 90 inches (229 cm): Designed for 8-foot ceilings when you want the cabinet to reach close to the ceiling. With toe kick and ceiling trim, this leaves minimal gap. Also works well in homes with 9-foot ceilings with a more proportional look.
  • 60 inches (153 cm): A mid-height option useful for specific situations like under-window placement or in kitchens with lower ceilings.

Widths Available

  • 15 inches (38 cm): Narrow pull-out pantry — great for spice storage or small items
  • 18 inches (46 cm): Slim pantry tower with shelves or pull-outs
  • 24 inches (61 cm): Standard pantry width — the most versatile and popular choice
  • 30 inches (76 cm): Wide pantry with room for larger items and more shelving
  • 36 inches (91 cm): Extra-wide option for maximum storage (less common but available for certain configurations)

Depths

  • 15 inches (38 cm): Shallow depth — useful for hallway pantries or when space is tight
  • 24 inches (61 cm): Standard depth — matches base cabinets and provides deep storage

Types of Tall Cabinet Configurations

The Classic Pantry Tower

A pantry tower uses a full-height cabinet with multiple adjustable shelves inside. Both doors open to reveal floor-to-ceiling shelving. This is the most straightforward and affordable tall cabinet configuration.

Best for:

  • Dry goods and canned food storage
  • Small appliance storage (stand mixer, blender, food processor)
  • Cookware that does not fit in base cabinets
  • Baking supplies and bulk items

Configuration tips:

  • Use adjustable shelves to customize spacing for your specific items
  • Leave the bottom shelf higher than the rest to store tall items like a stand mixer or stock pot
  • Add IKEA's UTRUSTA shelf inserts to double your shelf capacity for smaller items
  • Consider adding interior lighting (a battery-operated LED strip or IKEA's OMLOPP lighting) since the deep interior gets dark

The Pull-Out Pantry

IKEA's narrow (15-inch and 18-inch) tall cabinets work beautifully as pull-out pantry towers when fitted with internal pull-out drawers or wire baskets. The entire contents slide out on runners, making everything visible and accessible.

Best for:

  • Narrow spaces where a full-width door would block traffic
  • Maximizing slim spaces between appliances or beside a refrigerator
  • Spice storage, oil and vinegar collection, and small jars
  • Households where organization and visibility are priorities

Configuration tips:

  • Use IKEA MAXIMERA drawers inside the tall cabinet frame for a full-extension pull-out
  • Wire basket inserts allow visibility and ventilation (good for produce)
  • The 15-inch width fits perfectly in the gap often left beside a standard 36-inch refrigerator
  • Weight capacity matters — check the drawer runner rating if you plan to store heavy cans or bottles

The Oven Tower

A tall cabinet configured to house a built-in oven (and sometimes a microwave above or below) is called an oven tower. IKEA provides specific frame configurations for this purpose.

Oven tower layout options:

  1. Oven at mid-height with storage above and below: The most ergonomic option — the oven is at a comfortable height without bending
  2. Double oven stack: Two built-in ovens stacked vertically for serious home cooks
  3. Oven with microwave above and storage below: Practical combination that frees up counter space
  4. Oven with warming drawer below and storage above: A luxury option for those who entertain frequently

Installation considerations:

  • Verify your oven's exact dimensions against the IKEA cabinet opening — not all ovens fit all SEKTION configurations
  • Built-in ovens require a dedicated electrical circuit (usually 240V)
  • Ventilation space behind and above the oven is critical — follow the oven manufacturer's clearance requirements
  • The oven tower should be placed away from corners so the oven door can open fully without hitting adjacent cabinets

The Refrigerator Enclosure

Tall cabinets can be used to create a built-in look around a freestanding refrigerator. Side panels and an overhead cabinet frame the refrigerator, giving it an integrated appearance without the cost of a true built-in refrigerator.

Configuration:

  • Two tall side panels (cover panels) flanking the refrigerator
  • A bridging cabinet above the refrigerator (12 to 15 inches tall)
  • A filler strip across the top if needed for ceiling-height integration
  • Allow at least 1 inch of space on each side and 2 inches above for ventilation

The Utility Tower

A tall cabinet placed in a utility or laundry area adjacent to the kitchen can hold cleaning supplies, a vacuum, brooms, and mops. The interior uses hooks and narrow shelves instead of standard kitchen shelving.

Useful interior additions:

  • IKEA UTRUSTA hooks for hanging tools
  • Narrow wire baskets for cleaning product bottles
  • A pull-out shelf at waist height for frequently used items
  • A towel bar mounted inside the door

Internal Organization Options

The inside of your tall cabinet matters as much as the exterior. IKEA and third-party manufacturers offer numerous organizing solutions.

IKEA's Own Options

  • UTRUSTA adjustable shelves: Standard flat shelves that click into place at various heights. Included with most tall cabinets.
  • UTRUSTA pull-out internal drawers: Wire frame drawers on runners that mount inside the cabinet.
  • MAXIMERA full-extension drawers: Premium drawers with soft-close and full extension. Can be configured inside tall cabinets.
  • UTRUSTA shelf inserts: Wire half-shelves that sit on existing shelves to create two tiers.
  • OMLOPP LED lighting: Battery or hardwired LED strips for interior illumination.

Third-Party Upgrades

  • Rev-A-Shelf pull-out systems: High-end pull-out shelving designed for standard cabinet widths. These offer smoother operation and higher weight capacity than IKEA's options.
  • Swing-out pantry systems: The entire shelf unit swings out of the cabinet on hinges, providing full access to every shelf simultaneously.
  • Door-mounted racks: Racks that attach to the inside of cabinet doors for spice jars, wrap boxes, or small containers.
  • Custom drawer dividers: Adjustable dividers that turn deep drawers into organized compartments.

Placement Strategy: Where to Put Tall Cabinets

Where you position tall cabinets in your layout significantly affects both functionality and aesthetics.

Best Placement Options

At the end of a cabinet run: Placing a tall pantry at the end of a wall of base and wall cabinets creates a clean bookend. The tall cabinet anchors the design visually and does not break up the countertop workspace.

Flanking the refrigerator: A pantry tower on one or both sides of the refrigerator creates a wall of tall storage that looks intentional and built-in. This is one of the most popular configurations in mid-Atlantic IKEA kitchens.

On a separate wall: In L-shaped or U-shaped kitchens, dedicating one wall or section to tall cabinets keeps them out of the primary work zone while providing easy access.

Adjacent to the cooking zone: Placing the pantry near the stove or oven means ingredients are close at hand during cooking. This is a practical choice for avid home cooks.

Placement to Avoid

In the middle of a countertop run: A tall cabinet breaking up a stretch of base cabinets and countertop destroys workflow and creates an awkward visual interruption.

Blocking natural light: Tall cabinets next to windows can cast shadows. Consider the position relative to windows, especially in kitchens that rely on natural light.

Opposite a narrow walkway: In galley kitchens, a 24-inch-deep tall cabinet opposite a 24-inch-deep base cabinet can create a passage that feels too narrow. Make sure you maintain at least 42 inches between opposing cabinet faces.

Tall Cabinet Installation Specifics

Tall cabinets require extra care during installation:

Wall Mounting

  • SEKTION tall cabinets are mounted to the wall using the SEKTION suspension rail, just like wall cabinets
  • The suspension rail must hit studs — tall cabinets fully loaded with food and dishes are heavy
  • In older mid-Atlantic homes with plaster-and-lath walls, use appropriate anchors rated for the weight
  • A 24-inch-wide, 80-inch-tall pantry fully loaded can weigh 250 to 400 pounds

Leveling

  • Tall cabinets amplify any floor unevenness — a slight slope that is invisible on a 30-inch-wide base cabinet becomes very noticeable on a 90-inch-tall cabinet
  • Use the adjustable legs to level precisely, then check with a long level on both the face and side
  • The cabinet must be plumb (vertically straight) on both the front face and the side, or doors will not close properly

Assembly Tips

  • Assemble tall cabinet frames on the floor before lifting into position — it is much easier
  • Have at least two people for lifting (three is better for the 90-inch height)
  • Install shelves and internal hardware before mounting on the wall if possible, though some components are easier to install after
  • Attach doors last, after the cabinet is mounted and level

Cost Considerations

Tall cabinets offer exceptional value in terms of cost per cubic foot of storage:

  • A 24-inch-wide by 80-inch-tall SEKTION cabinet frame runs approximately $150 to $200
  • Doors and drawer fronts add $100 to $400 depending on the style chosen
  • Internal organizers range from $20 (basic shelves) to $250+ (full pull-out systems)
  • A complete pantry tower with doors, shelves, and basic organizers typically costs $400 to $800

Compare that to the equivalent storage in base and wall cabinets, which would require multiple units totaling significantly more. Tall cabinets are one of the best investments in an IKEA kitchen design.

Planning Your Tall Cabinets in the IKEA Planner

When using the IKEA Kitchen Planner:

  1. Place tall cabinets early in the design process — they anchor the layout
  2. Verify ceiling height clearance (account for the toe kick adding approximately 4 inches to the total height)
  3. Check that tall cabinet doors clear adjacent walls, windows, and other cabinet doors
  4. Use the item list to verify that you have ordered all internal components — the cabinet frame, shelves, hinges, doors, and legs are often separate line items

Common Planning Mistakes with Tall Cabinets

Avoid these errors that we see regularly during installations:

  • Forgetting the toe kick height. An 80-inch cabinet plus a 4-inch toe kick equals 84 inches total. In a room with an 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling, that leaves 12 inches above the cabinet. A 90-inch cabinet plus the toe kick equals 94 inches, leaving only 2 inches — enough for a clean finish but no room for crown molding.
  • Not ordering enough cover panels. Tall cabinets almost always have at least one exposed side. A 90-inch cover panel is a separate order item that is easy to forget.
  • Placing the tall cabinet where it blocks a window. In the planner's top-down view, windows are not always visible. Switch to the 3D view or check your measurement notes to verify no window conflicts.
  • Overlooking weight when planning internal organizers. A fully loaded 24-inch-wide pantry with canned goods, small appliances, and dry goods can weigh well over 300 pounds. Ensure the wall mounting is into studs, not just drywall anchors.
